adelphi is a Berlin-based independent think tank and public policy consultancy on climate, energy, environment and development. Its mission is to improve global governance through research, dialogue and advice. adelphi plays an overarching coordinating role for the V-LED project and keeps the interlinkages amongst V-LED countries, and between them and the global level.
In 2000, when Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA) was founded, the role of cities in sustainable energy transitions and the scale of urban energy consumption were unknown. Twenty years later cities are recognised as crucial for transforming energy demand and emissions. We have tracked energy use in South African cities, as well as trends in energy efficiency, renewable energy uptake and the governance of this transition for over a decade, in the State of Energy in South African Cities reports. In 2021, we see cause for optimism.
Kenya’s County Climate Change Funds are an innovative governance mechanism channelling finance to the local level and increase public participation. Ormoc City in the Philippines is leveraging climate finance by building strong partnerships. Colombia’s Regional Change Nodes integrate climate chance responses by the different levels of government in the country. Three out of four Real Practice Studies are out now.
